Praise for LUCKY TOMORROW
Deborah has shown us that we have neighbors. Our neighbors are wrongly shut off by walls, and we are supposed to behave as if they aren't our neighbors, but in fact, they are.
We can go past those walls and discover that the people who are there are way more the same as us than different, and that under the same circumstances that they've lived, we might be there too.
I am grateful for the opportunity to both understand that and to have gone with Deborah past those walls and discover that we are all one community.
— Gloria Steinem
Deborah Jiang-Stein is an eloquent witness to the humanity of our fellow community members who are not only overlooked or unseen but, as Arundhati Roy would say, are the 'deliberately silenced, or the preferably unheard.' Jiang-Stein’s protagonists grieve, yearn, hope, and love their way in a world that hurriedly pushes them aside.
— JaeRan Kim, Scholar, Researcher, School of Social Work and Criminal Justice at University of Washington
Lucky Tomorrow is a journey of chance encounters, a series of opportunities to experience the majesty of everyday people, to dip one’s toes briefly into the ocean of someone else’s inner life, and to be reminded that these small intimacies and the people who carry them are precious. Each of the characters that Jiang-Stein introduces here will linger long after you close this book.
— Brittney Cooper, Author of the New York Times Bestseller Eloquent Rage
I have a theory that the most important experiences of human life often happen in a profound periphery--in places decentered or even hidden from mainstream attention. The stories and characters in Lucky Tomorrow are like brilliant stars that dropped out of the night sky screaming I exist, I endure, I have a voice. Deborah Jiang-Stein has rearranged the cosmos to give grounded angels their songs back. Every page of this book is a micro supernova of the heart.
Lidia Yuknavitch, Author of Reading the Waves, and Thrust
In this panorama of invitingly short stories about people from all walks of life keeping true to themselves while surviving, Deborah Jiang-Stein's empathy exudes uncommon valor. These characters live in prisons and in other milieus far from the spotlights enjoyed by the fortunate and the famous, and the clarity of Jiang-Stein's prose renders them often starkly yet always compellingly.

Prison Baby: A Memoir (Beacon Press)
Prison Baby is Deborah’s deeply personal and inspiring memoir about her difficult journey, from her birth in a federal prison, to self-acceptance in adulthood.
Born to a mother who struggles with chronic use of opioids, Deborah spent the first year of her life in incarceration, then placed into foster care until she was adopted into a permanent family.
Deborah survived developmental delays but struggled with medical and mental health challenges. Much like her birth mother, she slipped into struggles with chronic use of drugs and alcohol in her teens as a way to cope with loss, trauma, and sorrow.
Now clean and sober for over 20 years, Deborah shares her story, along with a curriculum of tools and life skills, of what it takes to reclaim a path of purpose in life and find redemption by working with people in prison for find freedom inside by making plans for life after prison.
